Sofa Repair Diary 2025

May / 5月
My old sofa is a two-seater (love seat), and when I lie down, my feet stick out. I decided to look for a big sofa, I searched Facebook marketplace and found an EQ3 sofa, which usually sells for around $3,000, for just $150.

I contacted the person selling it, and they told me that the sofa had been in a house fire and had a burnt smell. (fortunately he and his dog are safe)

I'm a repair person. I thought I could get a quality sofa at a good price by re-upholstering it with new fabric. I asked Leia about buying this sofa and she said yes, so I rented a U-haul moving van and headed over to pick it up.

After inspecting the sofa and making sure there was no damage other than the smell, I purchased it. The U-haul fee cost more than sofa.

Here's the sofa I purchased.

After arriving home, I removed the old, burnt-smelling fabric and left it outside for a few days.

On the back, I saw a 'Made in Canada' label on it. I was quite lucky to find a good quality sofa. Good memory in May.

September / 9月

Summer in Canada is always very busy, so I left the sofa in my studio for four months. It even started to accumulate some junk on top of it. If this continued, I'd end up being one of those unfortunate people who bought a burnt-smelling sofa. I finally got started.

First, I had to choose the fabric. I had some fabric sitting in the studio that I'd originally planned to use for another project. I found the fabric is good for upholstery, so I decided to use it. I started with three cushion covers for the back.

I created a pattern from the original cover and carefully finished the first one, and once I was happy with the length and size of the zipper, I finished the rest. I've made covers many times before, so it was quick and easy.

Next up was the cushion cover. It's a bit of an odd shape. I didn't have enough black dust cover fabric. I'll get to that later.

Next came the complicated part: the large piece that wraps around the entire frame. Rather than overthinking it, I numbered the original pieces and figured out the assembly steps.

Since it's symmetrical, I cut it so that both sides are reversed, and finished it while balancing the length, width, and height. In the meantime, I needed more black material, so I contacted Christina, who is the owner of an upholstery shop in Merrickville.

I was relieved when she checked my progress and told me to keep going. I also got the black dust cover fabric.

It's a job that's like fitting together a three-dimensional puzzle. I also had to process the material myself, measure and sew, over and over again.

It gradually took shape.
I also finished the seat cover, which I had been putting off. All that was left now was to adjust the tension of the fabric and I would finish it.

October / 10月

The sofa is more beautiful, of higher quality, and more comfortable than the original. I really like the denim dot fabric used this time. It reminds me of the grill cloth on an old guitar amp and has a classic feel.

I wanted to show it off to my friends, so I brought it home from the workshop when they were willing to come over. Everyone was amazed my work.

After I finished adjusting the tension, to make it even more comfortable, I made armrests and pillows on both ends from the scraps.

Now I can relax. Fin.
