Zipper replacement for my friend's favorite jacket.

I have some reasons why I don't make many blog posts. First, if I have time, I'd rather work with my sewing machine or walk my dog than write a blog. More than anything, I want to take a break if I have some free time! 

That being said, thus time I want to share with you about this repair  I completed for my friend's winter coat. I took a lot of photos about the process of how I do zipper replacements. My friend was very thankful for this repair.

でも今回は友達の冬用ジャケットを修理して、工程の写真をたくさん撮ったし、友人からの感謝の言葉ももらったから書こうと思う。

The zipper didn't work well in this jacket. It's normal if you use the same jacket every winter over the years. Some people like to buy a new jacket when  the zipper or some other parts of their jacket need to be repaired. But my friend loves this jacket and didn't want to lose it, so she wanted me to help. I like how she thinks about this jacket.

ジッパーがうまく噛み合わなくなった。消耗品だから、壊れたタイミングで大体の人は新しいジャケットを買う。でも彼女はこのジャケットが好きで手放したくないから私に依頼してくれた。私ははそんな友達の暖かい心が好き。

This is the replacement zipper. I use YKK zipper for my most of the work because it's durable and high quality.

交換用ジッパー。大体の仕事でYKKのジッパーを使う。理由は品質が高く耐久性があるから。

First I removed the old zipper.

まずは古いジッパーを取り外す。

I used a seam ripper to open up the jacket. Sometimes I use a cutter or do this by hand.

ニッパーを使ってある程度開けたら、カッターを使ったり両手で引き取ったり。

I removed the zipper.

全て取れた。

Next, I removed all the remaining threads. Keeping the threads there or not depends on the repair person's personal style. I prefer to remove them.  

次はジャケットの残り糸を全て取り除く。結局この糸を綺麗に取るか、無視して次の工程に進むかは性格によると思う。私は几帳面だ。

Here's the sewing machine part. It takes a 20 min or so before sewing. I sewed the front part of jacket to the zipper first.

ここからミシンの登場。意外とここに辿り着くまでが長い(20-30分くらい)。ジャケットのアウトシェルとジッパーを縫い合わせる。

This is the back side of the jacket.

縫い目が表に出ないよう工夫して縫う。

Next I sewed the inner part of the coat to the front part with a zipper. I sew by hand roughly (red stitch) before machine work, that's the key.

ジャケットのインナーとアウターを縫い合わせる。赤い糸が見えるが、事前に手縫いで仮止めした。これがあると一発で綺麗に縫える。

I sewed a new zipper on both sides.  I need to cut to a particularly length. I mark it to make sure I make no mistake.

両方のジッパーが縫えた。最後のバランス調整。長いジッパーもここでジャケットの長さに合わせる。

I cut a bit past the mark. I clean the edge by using a pocket lighter.

印の部分から５、６個目の歯でカットし、ライターで切断部を炙る。

I take off zipper teeth.

その後余分の歯をペンチで引き取る。

I install end stops for the zippers

ストッパーを付けてスライダーが飛び出ないように。

If both sides fit perfectly, I'm so happy.

両サイドがぴったり合えばいい仕事した気分になる。

All done!

これで完成！

It takes 2 to 3 hour to replace zippers so it costs around $110 to $160 dollars.

平均2時間から3時間かかるので、価格は110 - 160ドル。
